One Book SMUSD 2020 Refugee

One Book SMUSD 2020

One Book SMUSD is a district-wide book club in which 6th-8th graders at all SMUSD middle schools are invited to read the same book simultaneously, along with parents, school staff and administrators, district personnel, and other community members.

The goal of the program is to create a community-wide reading culture that supports and encourages literacy, through a shared and interactive reading experience.

For our inaugural program, we will be reading the book Refugee by Alan Gratz. This award-winning, historical fiction novel tells the story of 3 refugees; Josef, a Jewish boy escaping Nazi Germany in the 1930s, Isabel, a Cuban girl escaping Castro’s regime in 1994, and Mahmoud, a Syrian boy fleeing from the conflict in Syria in 2015. All three children go on dangerous journeys, get separated from family members, and witness unthinkable suffering and death. The reading schedule will be as follows:

Each middle school in the district will be hosting weekly meetings, at which students will discuss the book and interact with students at other sites through Flipgrid. Several ELA classes at each school will also be participating as a whole class. You can follow along with the weekly discussions by visiting our website: http://bit.ly/onebooksmusd.

The program will culminate in an evening event at Double Peak School on Wednesday, March 25th, from 7-9PM. This event will give participants the chance to interact in person with other participants, and the opportunity to hear speakers who will share their own refugee experiences.
