Dear Parents and Family Members:

On behalf of our school staff I would like to welcome you to San Marcos Middle School. We are honored to serve your child, and look forward to working collaboratively with you to provide a high quality, rigorous and nurturing school environment.

Here at San Marcos Middle School, we recognize the unique and important time period that the middle school years represents in our students' lives. For many students, the transition from an elementary to secondary setting can be challenging. In addition to the rigors of secondary education, many students also experience the challenges of adolescence.

To meet these unique challenges, our staff focuses on four key areas, that we call the Crusader Commitment. First, our staff is committed to providing high quality instruction in all classrooms, with rigorous and relevant academic activities. Next, we are committed to supporting literacy in all academic areas, with a focus on meaningful reading, writing, listening, and speaking experiences for students.

Third, we are committed to supporting student success through a multi-tiered system of supports. These supports focus on identifying students that need additional assistance, and matching their needs to the appropriate intervention. Finally, we are committed to student engagement, by providing a variety of extra-curricular activities, clubs, and athletics that keep students connected to school.

Socially, our school provides a variety of in-school and extracurricular activities and opportunities designed to engage students in the learning process and to build character skills they will need as they develop into young adults. I implore you to encourage your child to take advantage of the various clubs, sports teams, music events, and academic opportunities available at our school. By being engaged in both classroom and extracurricular activities, students develop character traits such as perseverance, teamwork, and respect that will serve them well throughout their life.

Additionally, our staff is committed to providing a physically and emotionally safe environment for your child. At San Marcos Middle School all students and their families are valued. We hold high expectations for our students and staff, and reinforce positive behavior through encouragement, incentives and school-wide recognition. Additionally, our team of Assistant Principals, Counselors and Social Workers are available to provide on-site support for students in need, and to connect parents and guardians with off campus resources if needed.

Finally, we strongly encourage you to participate in your child's education here at San Marcos Middle School. Below are a few simple ways you can support your child this school year:

  • Use the Academic Planner. Every student is given a planner to record his or her assignments and organize their school life. Set expectations that your student will use this planner, and review it with them daily.
  • Monitor Grades and Assignments through Jupiter Grades. You will receive information regarding the use of this system. We encourage you to access your child's grades regularly. Computers are available for your use at our site throughout the day if technology is needed.
  • Contact Teachers & Counselors. Staff is available by phone or email if you have questions or concerns.
  • Communicate your Expectations. You are your child's greatest role model for academic and personal success. We encourage you to help your child set goals for his or her future, and stress the importance of academic achievement.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to a wonderful year and working with you in the future.
